We don't know, it's  something about a repulsive force that we may not   9 00:00:49.520 --> 00:00:55.600 fully understand, or new physics that we don't  fully understand. But Hubble was used along,   10 00:00:55.600 --> 00:01:01.360 in complement, with some telescopes on the ground  to determine that the expansion of the universe   11 00:01:01.360 --> 00:01:07.040 is in fact accelerating by something we're now  calling dark energy, and without Hubble, we   12 00:01:07.040 --> 00:01:17.084 would have not been able to make this detection,  which is now a Nobel Prize winning discovery. 13 00:01:17.084 --> 00:01:21.360 This explains why the universe appears to be  accelerating now, when it used to be slowing   14 00:01:21.360 --> 00:01:27.120 down because of gravity.
