WEBVTT FILE 1 00:00:01.050 --> 00:00:05.050 [Music throughout] Narrator: WFIRST, the Widefield Infrared 2 00:00:05.050 --> 00:00:09.050 Survey Telescope, will capture images unlike any satellite before it. 3 00:00:09.050 --> 00:00:13.050 WFIRST will have the same image resolution as Hubble, but will cover 4 00:00:13.050 --> 00:00:17.050 an area 100 times larger. To see what the sky 5 00:00:17.050 --> 00:00:21.050 will look like to WFIRST, scientists use special processing 6 00:00:21.050 --> 00:00:25.050 techniques to create simulated images. In this case, 7 00:00:25.050 --> 00:00:29.050 they began with a Hubble mosaic of Andromeda, one of the closest 8 00:00:29.050 --> 00:00:33.050 galaxies to our own. This mosaic was created out of over 9 00:00:33.050 --> 00:00:37.050 400 individual Hubble images. WFIRST will be able to 10 00:00:37.050 --> 00:00:41.050 create a similar mosaic with just two images. 11 00:00:41.050 --> 00:00:45.050 The simulated image is not just special because of its size, however. 12 00:00:45.050 --> 00:00:49.050 It also shows Andromeda as it will appear through WFIRST’s optics and 13 00:00:49.050 --> 00:00:53.050 infrared filters. With an unprecedented combination of breadth 14 00:00:53.050 --> 00:01:00.070 and depth, WFIRST will open a new era in viewing 15 00:01:00.070 --> 00:01:00.075 our universe.
