00:12:20.400.00:12:24.501 that will enable us to look back on the universe. 00:12:24.501.00:12:29.200 This was done because of three key elements. 00:12:29.200.00:12:31.634 It was based on teamwork, 00:12:31.634.00:12:35.434 training, and extraordinary technical competency 00:12:35.434.00:12:38.534 that all came together to fix Hubble. 00:12:38.534.00:12:41.067 In April of 1994, when Hubble launched, 00:12:41.067.00:12:44.033 the world waited with great anticipation 00:12:44.033.00:12:45.934 for Hubble's pictures. 00:12:45.934.00:12:49.501 We know that Hubble came back with some blurred images. 00:12:49.501.00:12:52.501 We held congressional hearings and worked with NASA 00:12:52.501.00:12:54.167 to come up with the fix, 00:12:54.167.00:12:57.133 and we knew that the fix really was important 00:12:57.133.00:13:02.100 to be able to restore confidence in this space agency's ability 00:13:02.100.00:13:05.367 to deliver on time and online 00:13:05.367.00:13:08.834 to really fulfill both its promise 00:13:08.834.00:13:10.834 and, well, its expectation. 00:13:10.834.00:13:14.968 I believe these pictures are tangible evidence 00:13:14.968.00:13:17.467 that not only has Hubble been fixed 00:13:17.467.00:13:21.467 but NASA is well on its way to fix that culture 00:13:21.467.00:13:23.634 that created some of these problems. 00:13:23.634.00:13:25.834 So we are very pleased about this, 00:13:25.834.00:13:28.334 and we're very pleased with the teamwork, 00:13:28.334.00:13:32.000 the enormous training and the technical competence 00:13:32.000.00:13:33.133 that went into this. 00:13:33.133.00:13:36.767 This was a high-stakes repair for Hubble. 00:13:36.767.00:13:38.834 We didn't even have to undertake it 00:13:38.834.00:13:41.667 because the science was already important. 00:13:41.667.00:13:44.801 We were already doing science that never had been done 00:13:44.801.00:13:47.400 and never could've been done without Hubble, 00:13:47.400.00:13:49.801 but being the United States of America 00:13:49.801.00:13:53.734 and being the derring-do of the national space agency, 00:13:53.734.00:13:55.334 we wanted to correct Hubble 00:13:55.334.00:13:58.501 and restore it to its scientific capability 00:13:58.501.00:14:02.534 and its full scientific expectations, 00:14:02.534.00:14:07.133 and we did that because 1.200 people worked as a team. 00:14:07.133.00:14:10.567 both in the United States and around the world. 00:14:10.567.00:14:12.601 Space centers came together -- 00:14:12.601.00:14:15.734 Goddard, Houston, Cape Canaveral. 00:14:15.734.00:14:18.434 The Space Institute at Johns Hopkins 00:14:18.434.00:14:20.300 was the one that narrowed the options 00:14:20.300.00:14:24.100 to those that were specific, fiscally achievable, 00:14:24.100.00:14:27.334 and technically able to deliver. 00:14:27.334.00:14:30.067 We were happy that they were able to do that. 00:14:30.067.00:14:31.868 The training that went into this 00:14:31.868.00:14:33.968 was the most extraordinary training 00:14:33.968.00:14:36.667 that has ever been done for a space mission, 00:14:36.667.00:14:41.267 but now we know that NASA has the right stuff to do it, 00:14:41.267.00:14:44.901 and we know what it takes to be able to operationalize 00:14:44.901.00:14:46.434 our good intentions, 00:14:46.434.00:14:49.534 and not at all least is the very important 00:14:49.534.00:14:52.200 testing and technical competence. 00:14:52.200.00:14:56.100 This mirror and Wide Field/Planetary Camera 00:14:56.100.00:14:58.634 was tested, tested again, 00:14:58.634.00:15:03.267 and then once it was tested was tested one more time. 00:15:03.267.00:15:06.868 We knew that when NASA was ready to launch 00:15:06.868.00:15:10.367 that the equipment was ready and that it would work. 00:15:10.367.00:15:14.701 The result of this hard work is shown in these pictures, 00:15:14.701.00:15:17.167 but we then, now, see what it will mean. 00:16:21.501.00:16:25.534 to collect 60 percent of the energy. 00:16:25.534.00:16:26.734 When Hubble was first launched, 00:16:26.734.00:16:29.968 we only collected 12 percent of the energy. 00:16:29.968.00:16:34.868 Our wildest dream was to get 70 percent. 00:16:34.868.00:16:38.634 The theoretical limit was 85 percent, 00:16:38.634.00:16:42.767 and we know we've exceeded the 70 percent wildest dream, 00:16:42.767.00:16:44.400 and the scientists in the days ahead 00:16:44.400.00:16:46.133 will be able to narrow it down 00:16:46.133.00:16:49.067 and tell you how close to theory we
