GPM observed the storm’s rainfall with its two unique science instruments: the GPM Microwave Imager (GMI) and Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR). As the visualization shows, the instruments observed a large swath of heavy precipitation extending to the north and east of the hurricane’s center, which matched earlier forecasts that called for particularly heavy rainfall across the storm’s path.\r
These two- and three-dimensional observations of precipitation structure are the hallmark of the GPM mission – managed jointly by NASA and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) -- which aims improve our understanding of the water cycle and extreme weather events, and contributes to improved climate modeling and weather forecasting around the world. \r
These visualizations depict the GPM satellite pass about seven hours after Hurricane Eta made landfall on the coast of Nicaragua as a category 4 storm. Current NHC forecasts indicate Eta will move northwest over Central America then head northeast across the Caribbean Sea, threatening Cuba and Florida early next week.\r

Eta is the 28th named storm of 2020 which beats the 2005 record for the most named storms in a single hurricane season. (See 27 Storms: Arlene to Zeta for a summary of the 2005 hurricane season).\r

The season also gave rise to Katrina, one of the most intense and costliest hurricanes that resulted in 1,200 deaths and more than $100 billion in damages. The unusually high frequency and strength of these tropical storms were linked to favorable development conditions observed in the ocean and atmosphere between the Caribbean Sea and west coast of Africa where they form. Easterly winds blowing off the African continent seeded the Atlantic with a large number of proto-hurricanes—swirling air masses that grow over tropical waters. Ideal open ocean wind patterns on the surface and high above permitted storm clouds to easily mature into vigorous convective cells—the building blocks of hurricanes. Warmer ocean surface waters slightly above their 80 degrees Fahrenheit average further strengthened the storms and sent the spinning hurricanes into overdrive. The visualization below tracks the paths of all 27 tropical storms that made up this historical year. || ", "release_date": "2011-10-06T00:00:00-04:00", "update_date": "2023-05-03T13:53:35.721222-04:00", "main_image": { "id": 483058, "url": "https://nasaviz.gsfc.nasa.gov/vis/a010000/a010800/a010829/27stormsOL.00774_1024x576.jpg", "filename": "27stormsOL.00774_1024x576.jpg", "media_type": "Image", "alt_text": "Find out what fueled one of the worst hurricane seasons in history.", "width": 1024, "height": 576, "pixels": 589824 } } ], "sources": [], "products": [], "newer_versions": [ { "id": 4845, "url": "https://nasaviz.gsfc.nasa.gov/4845/", "page_type": "Visualization", "title": "NASA/JAXA GPM Satellite Sees Eta Make Second Florida Landfall", "description": "Tropical Storm Eta over the Florida west coast on November 11, 2020 at approximately 9:11 EST (14:11Z). || eta1111.2200_print.jpg (1024x576) [133.1 KB] || eta1111.2200_searchweb.png (320x180) [114.9 KB] || eta1111.2200_thm.png (80x40) [7.8 KB] || eta1111.mp4 (1920x1080) [86.4 MB] || frames/1920x1080_16x9_30p/exrs/ (1920x1080) [64.0 KB] || frames/1920x1080_16x9_30p/tifs/ (1920x1080) [64.0 KB] || eta1111.webm (1920x1080) [6.0 MB] || ", "release_date": "2020-11-12T14:00:00-05:00", "update_date": "2023-11-15T00:16:38.616597-05:00", "main_image": { "id": 440310, "url": "https://nasaviz.gsfc.nasa.gov/vis/a000000/a004800/a004845/eta1111.2200_print.jpg", "filename": "eta1111.2200_print.jpg", "media_type": "Image", "alt_text": "Tropical Storm Eta over the Florida west coast on November 11, 2020 at approximately 9:11 EST (14:11Z).
