Landsat Image Mosaic of Antarctica Flyover of Western Antarctica
The Landsat Image Mosaic of Antarctica (LIMA) is a data product funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and jointly produced by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The LIMA data shown here uses the pan-chromatic band and has a resolution of 15 meters per pixel. The 13 swaths used to generate this sample mosaic where acquired between December 25, 1999 and December 31, 2001. The elevation data shown has no vertical exaggeration (1x) and is courtesy of the Radarsat Antarctic Mapping Project (RAMP) Digital Elevation Model (DEM).
This animation shows Western Antarctica with data from the Landsat Image Mosaic of Antarctica (LIMA). The 3 minute flyover starts from McMurdo Station and hugs the coast until it reaches the Larsen Ice Shelf on the Antarctic Peninsula.
This is the same animation without the text overlays. This image shows Sulzberger Bay and the Sulzberger Ice Shelf which was first discovered in 1929 by the Byrd Antarctic Expedition.
The Russkaya station was a Soviet Antarctic research station that opened in 1980 and closed in 1990.
LIMA monitors the Thwaites Glacier.
This image is LIMA's view of Smyley Island, Spaatz Island, and the George VI Ice Shelf.
LIMA sees the Larsen Ice Shelf on the Antarctica Peninsula.
Mt. Takahe volcano in West Antarctica (76.2 °S, 112°W).
Mt. Takahe in West Antarctica has a summit which is more than 1000 meters above the surrounding ice sheet.
