Now fully assembled, the PACE spacecraft nears completion of its final environmental tests at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.

00:00:10:10 - 00:00:12:25

These tests ensure the spacecraft can survive the rigors of launch and orbit early next year.

00:00:12:25 - 00:00:17:13

The spacecraft and instruments are all together assembled in this chamber behind me,

00:00:18:01 - 00:00:21:13

and we are blasting them with acoustic energy

00:00:22:00 - 00:00:25:12

to look at the response of the different parts of the observatory

00:00:25:12 - 00:00:27:20

and make sure nothing gets damaged.

00:00:28:21 - 00:00:32:00

And the reason we do this is to simulate the launch environment

00:00:32:00 - 00:00:35:03

for the vibration in the acoustic range during launch.

00:00:40:18 - 00:00:41:02

Today

00:00:41:02 - 00:00:46:20

the full level that we get up to is almost 140 decibels, which is very loud.

00:00:47:03 - 00:00:49:05

It would definitely damage your hearing.

00:00:49:14 - 00:00:53:20

It's like the same kind of noise you'd hear if you're close to an airplane

00:00:53:20 - 00:00:57:29

with a jet engine or a very loud rock concert near the speakers.

00:00:58:12 - 00:01:03:04

For years, I've been witnessing tests in this chamber for various missions,

00:01:03:15 - 00:01:06:21

and I always see the large speakers in there,

00:01:06:21 - 00:01:10:26

and they're shaped like cones, which remind me of bells of brass instruments.

00:01:11:10 - 00:01:14:19

And so I thought, you know, what could we do to have

00:01:14:23 - 00:01:19:03

a group of musicians play and see if they could equal the sound

00:01:19:12 - 00:01:23:24

that we simulate during one of our launch acoustics tests.

00:01:25:19 - 00:02:27:09

[”Also Sprach Zarathustra” plays]

00:02:29:27 - 00:02:32:29

The Marine Band didn’t quite match the same sound levels PACE withstood, but made a different lasting impression...

00:02:33:02 - 00:02:36:12

The musicians composed a fanfare for PACE’s journey.

00:02:37:16 - 00:03:03:01

[loud drum hit followed by a swell of orchestral music]
