Scientists are taking their offices to Colorado’s snow country.

In a new 5-year study called SnowEx, researchers are improving techniques to determine how much water is stored in snow-covered regions, globally.

Measuring how much water is in a snowpack is not easy.

Forests and different terrains can influence snow depth and density and the kinds of sensors that can be used to measure it.

Scientists are investigating the best combination of sensors for these different environments.

More accurate snow measurements will help scientists and decision makers better understand our world’s water supply and better predict floods and droughts.

This year the study is being carried out in Grand Mesa and Senator Beck Basin.

The variety of forest cover and snow conditions makes these sites good testbeds for developing global measurements of snow.

Now that is an office with a view.
